Sciatica Q & A
What causes sciatica?
Sciatica symptoms are caused by the inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerves run from your lower back down through your buttock on each side, then down each leg into your foot and toes.
The classic sciatica symptoms are caused by a condition such as degenerative disc disease, a herniated disc, vertebral displacement, or spinal stenosis. Many patients refer to sciatica as a “pinched nerve” because any of these medical issues cause the nerve to be pinched or pressured, and may even lead to inflammation, all of which can cause the pain.
What are the common symptoms of sciatica?
Classic symptoms of sciatica include pain that starts in the lower back, then radiates down through one side of the buttocks and into the thigh. The pain may be sharp and stabbing and occur with certain movements, and some people describe it as having an excruciating “electric” feel to it. Some people experience tingling, burning, or a pins-and-needles sensation or even numbness, which can extend anywhere from the back down into the toes. The pain may make it difficult to stand or walk.
What treatment options are most effective?
The cause of your sciatica determines what treatment options are most effective, but Dr. King and his team prefer to use noninvasive medical chiropractic options to bring you relief.
Chiropractic adjustments can restore alignment, relieve pressure on the nerve, and bring balance to your back and hips. Proper spinal alignment helps reduce inflammation and restores optimal blood flow to your irritated tissues.
Massage therapy can help relieve muscle tension around the area and help restore blood flow.
Rehabilitation exercises that target the lower back and hips can improve flexibility, strengthen your core muscles, and relieve pressure around the sciatic nerve.
Lifestyle advice may help you make changes in your daily life that prevent your sciatica from acting up. Dr. King and his staff provide instructions on preventive care, such as proper posture and body ergonomics, whether you sit at a computer all day or have an active job. If your weight is contributing to sciatica pain, he can help you with a weight loss plan.
